NEW RESOURCE: EBSCO eBook Clinical Collection

University of Liverpool staff and students now have access to the Ebsco eBook Clinical Collection.

The Ebsco eBook Clinical Collection contains over 2,000 titles focusing on medical specialties, nursing, allied health and general practice areas.

Titles are from 2008 onwards, with a significant majority published after 2010 and all have unlimited simultaneous user access. Newer titles replace older content as they become available, so users always have access to the latest information.

‘Stockley’s Drug Interactions’ now available online

We are very pleased to announce that the Library has taken out an online subscription to Stockley’s Drug Interactions.

Now in its tenth edition, Stockley's Drug Interactions is still the most indispensable and authoritative international source of drug interaction information. Based upon the many thousands of published clinical papers and reports, it provides a series of detailed, yet concise, monographs designed for quick and easy reference. Each monograph contains a summary, clinical evidence for the interaction under discussion, its probable mechanism, clinical importance, and management.

‘Acland’s Video Atlas of Human Anatomy’ now available online

Staff and students will be elated to learn that the University of Liverpool Library has recently acquired the latest online version of Acland’s Video Atlas of Human Anatomy. The previous version of this resource was frequently been used by staff and students of anatomy to support their teaching and learning, resulting in this resource being particularly valued by many of our users in the Faculty of Health and Life Science. As a result, the Library is very pleased that we are able to provide this new enhanced web version.

This new web version of Acland’s Video Atlas of Human Anatomy provides more than 300 narrated videos of real cadaver specimens. Furthermore, the content has been optimized for delivery via the web and allows users to see anatomical specimens in 3D.

An important feature in this new version is the inclusion of ‘test yourself’ questions, in order to help users to embed learning. Users also have anytime, anywhere access from any smartphone and tablet, while the search and navigation tools make it easy to find only the content that is required for course or exam review.

BMJ: Best Practice now available

In response to student feedback, we are very pleased to announce that the Library has taken out a subscription to BMJ Best Practice.

New subscription to JISC MediaHub

We now subscribe to JISC MediaHub a single point of access to three major multimedia archives purchased on behalf of JISC Collections. Access is from http://jiscmediahub.ac.uk/ which will prompt for institutional login, and it is listed in our catalogue and (soon) our A-Z list of databases powered by LibGuides. Content in JISC MediaHub cannot be found via Discover.

JISC MediaHubenables cross-searching and exploration of TV news, documentary films, still images and classical music from the following archives:

Digital Images for Education
The result of a significant procurement during 2009-10, this archive comprises over 56,000 images and 600 hours of film selected by the education community to capture world, UK and local events during the last 25 years. Sources include the AP Archive, Getty Images, ITN, Design Council Archives, Imperial War Museum, Royal Geographical Society, and PYMCA.

NewsFilm Online
Over 3,000 hours of digitised news stories from the ITN/Reuters archives, comprising some 60,000 stories. The sources include the complete Gaumont and Paramount newsreels, from 1910 and 1934 respectively. Previously unbroadcast and unseen material, such as rushes and programme scripts, are also included.

Film & Sound Online
Over 2,000 items, comprising 17 separate collections of digitised film and sound, including Imperial War Museum film footage, and scientific content from the Wellcome Library and the Biochemical Society. The archive also includes over 50 hours of classical music recording from the Culverhouse collection.

JISC MediaHub also enables users to search and link out to external media collections such as the Open Video Project, Wellcome Images, ADS, ARKive and the First World War Poetry Archive.

New Elsevier journal agreement

The Library has signed up to the new JISC Collections NESLi2 'Big Deal' journal agreement with Elsevier.

Under the new agreement, which runs for 5 years from 2012 to 2016, we have decided to cancel a few low-use (but usually high-price) titles:

Some of these have not been available to us before because they are not included in the Freedom Collection, and others are our best-used, non-subscribed titles in the collection. By subscribing to these titles we will earn permanent access to the content published during our subscription. We are only subscribing to new titles where usage statistics show that a reasonable number of abstracts have been viewed, suggesting that there is demand for these titles.

Access to all Health Sciences eBooks on ScienceDirect for a year

As previously announced, we have access to all non-Health Sciences eBooks on ScienceDirect for the whole of 2011.

And now we have access to over 700 Health Sciences eBooks on ScienceDirect as well, until March 2012. Towards the end of this period we will be able to choose which titles we want to retain permanent access to (up to a particular value - unless we choose to spend more). Titles cover medicine, dentistry, health sciences, nursing and allied healthcare and veterinary medicine (though note that we have already bought the veterinary medicine collections up to and including 2008 titles).

All Informa Healthcare eBooks available for a year

Just as with our usage-driven acquisition trial of ScienceDirect eBooks, we now have access to all eBooks on the Informa Healthcare platform until the end of February 2012. At the end of this period we will be able to retain access to a number of titles of our choice, up to a maximum value.

We have loaded catalogue records for all titles and they have also been activated in find it @ liverpool (SFX).

Key medical e-textbooks now available – including Kumar & Clark

Following the successful trial last year of a new initiative from Elsevier which saw the launch of many of their key medical/nursing textbooks as e-books, the Library has now purchased a one year subscription to a selection of these titles. Faculty of 1000 Biology and Medicine merge

Faculty of 1000 Biology and Faculty of 1000 Medicine have merged to become... Faculty of 1000. Our subscription now also includes The Scientist: Magazine of the Life Sciences.

Never heard of Faculty of 1000? Think of it as a panel of experts who manage your information overload by highlighting and reviewing the articles that you really should read. Or the long version of that...

The core service of Faculty of 1000 (F1000) identifies and evaluates the most important articles in biology and medical research publications. The selection process comprises a peer-nominated global 'Faculty' of the world's leading scientists and clinicians who rate the best of the articles they read and explain their importance. Launched in 2002, F1000 was conceived as a collaboration of 1000 international Faculty Members. The remit of our service continues to grow and the Faculty now numbers more than 10,000 experts whose evaluations form a fully searchable resource identifying the best research available. Faculty Members and their evaluations are organized into over 40 Faculties (subjects), which are further subdivided into over 300 Sections. On average, 1,500 new evaluations are published each month; this corresponds to approximately the top 2% of all published articles in the biological and medical sciences.

Major purchase of CUP ebooks

We are delighted to announce that we have purchased all Cambridge University Press e-books published between 2005 and 2010, and prior to 1993 - some 4,732 titles in all. Furthermore, we will purchase their 2011 and 2012 lists too.

The titles include scholarly monographs and contributed volumes for which CUP have electronic rights, but not textbooks. By early 2011 CUP plan to make new e-books available on the platform at the same time that the printed book becomes available.

The Cambridge Books Online site has no restriction on the number of simultaneous users who can access it, and its e-books are presented as simple PDF files that we know readers prefer. Each chapter has been assigned it own DOI (Digital Object Identifier). This allows you to build a stable link to any chapter, which will work off-campus too, by just adding the chapter's DOI to the end of this URL: http://dx.doi.org.ezproxy.liv.ac.uk/

11 Made Incredibly Easy! medical e-textbooks purchased

We have purchased 11 Made Incredibly Easy! medical e-textbooks from Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins on the OvidSP platform. These e-books are presented as web pages without any restrictions on the number of readers who can access a title at the same time. When you want to print pages you can decide which size of images you want to include, or you can turn them off completely.

We are in the process of creating catalogue records for each title, but access is available now (with off-campus access viaEZproxy):

TRIAL: Medical e-textbooks from Elsevier

We have a trial of medical e-textbooks from Elsevier (Mosby, Churchill-Livingstone etc) until the end of August. These include really core titles like Kumar & Clark and Gray's Anatomy. The sort of e-textbooks that haven't previously been sold to libraries but only to individuals.

To access this trial go to: http://elsevieruk.pdn.ipublishcentral.com/. Ignore the login boxes to the left. Access is provided by IP recognition, not username and password.

For off-campus access, login to Apps Anywhere and launch Internet Explorer from its Web or Office folder, and then access the trial using that instance of Internet Explorer. If we subscribe we’ll setup off-campus access through EZproxy of course.

Subscriptions aren't cheap so we would only be able to afford to subscribe to a few titles. Before committing to that we want to be sure that you find these titles convenient to use online. So after trialling these e-textbooks please leave your comments below. Trials of databases on EBSCOhost

If we adopt EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) it will make sense to switch any abstracting and indexing databases that we currently take through other platforms to EBSCO instead (where possible). This will mean that they will be searched by the main EDS search, rather than having to bring in search results through its federated search component.

We are currently trialling all of the databases that it would be possible to switch to EBSCO. These all renew at different times of the year. The first to renew (with links to try them on the EBSCO platform) are, next month:

Taking these on the EBSCO platform would reunite them with Cinahl and allow us to simultaneously search AMED, BNI and Cinahl, even without recourse to EBSCO Discovery Service.

De Gruyter E-journals Collection available

From 2010 we have started subscription to the full collection of journals from De Gruyter. This adds access to nearly 80 titles in fields ranging from Classics to Medicine, on top of our existing subscriptions. The collection restores access to two titles that had to be cancelled in recent years despite of good levels of usage:

De Gruyter is celebrating 260 years of publishing and has recently announced a rebranding and modernisation of its image. It intends to increase the proportion of its output that is published in the English language.

Informa Healthcare collection 2009

As previously mentioned, we have subscribed to the Informa Healthcare collection for 2009. This collection comprises about 180 titles. Most of the titles were formerly included in the Taylor & Francis STM (and Full) Collection. In addition, the collection includes the highly regarded Expert Opinion titles and Current Medical Research and Opinion.

Most titles are available on the Informaworld platform. The Expert Opinion titles and CMRO are available on the new Informa Pharma Science platform, and some titles are available on both platforms!

Access extends back to volume 1 in most cases.
