Got a new smart card? Use it in the Library from Wednesday 29th August

From Wednesday 29th August, you will need your new Student ID card (smart card) to use the Library.

Your new card will make it easier to access the Library and use self-service. You can already use it for Follow-You printing and Computing Services will shortly be enabling its use for a range of other campus facilities and services.

Please keep hold of your old card until further notice, though, as you may still need it for certain services around campus for a little longer.

Harold Cohen Library Lower Study Room

Work has begun on developing the Harold Cohen Library Lower Study Room into a refreshments and group study area.

The creation of a new entrance from the front south corridor will greatly improve accessibility. The existing vending machines, along with the addition of a new hot drinks machine, will be moved from the corridor into this room. The new area will incorporate additional PCs and power points for laptops.

We apologise for any noise disruption or inconvenience caused. It is anticipated that the work will be completed for the start of the new academic session.

New Electronic Library site - now featuring improved full-text linking

The new Electronic Library site now features a new full-text link resolver:

It will replace find-it@liverpool when the new Electronic Library site goes live in early September and will improve the reliability and performance of full-text linking.

So, searching DISCOVER from the new Electronic Library site, you should now see the is it @ Liverpool? icon appearing in your results:

These links take you to a screen showing your full-text options or suggesting an ArticleReach request if a full-text journal is not available:

Please give it a try and leave us your comments below.

Referencing LibGuide

The Library has gathered together its information about referencing in a suite of Web pages called the Referencing LibGuide, at http://libguides.liv.ac.uk/referencing.

You can:
* find out why and how to reference and explore some of our interactive materials
* see the referencing styles in use at the University of Liverpool
* discover which reference management packages are available to help you

Accessing DISCOVER on iPads, Tablets and mobile devices

A recent new release of DISCOVER has improved access to Discover on mobile devices.

If you access  DISCOVER  through a small-screened mobile device you will automatically be taken to the new mobile version of DISCOVER, though still with the option to use the full site if you prefer. The new mobile version is full-featured: allowing you to search, view records, save results to a folder and view full-text (though you may prefer to save them and read them on a full size device later).

The new mobile interface is also available for EBSCOhost databases such as Business Source Premier and Cinahl.

Unfortunately this new release introduced a problem accessing DISCOVER on an iPad or Tablet: the Discover search boxes embedded in library web pages no longer work from iPads and other tablets, and previously saved Permalinks don't work either.

But you can still access DISCOVER at:

http://search.ebscohost.com.ezproxy.liv.ac.uk/login.aspx?authtype=ip&profile=EDS

whatever device you use.

EBSCO are aware of the problem with iPads and other tablets and should have a fix in place by the end of August.

Try the new Electronic Library site

The Electronic Library site will be changing soon to take advantage of improvements to the way we manage e-resources.

The new site gives more emphasis to searching and browsing a complete list of titles, rather than listings and search tools by material type.

Benefits include:
  • - seamless access to quality-assured collections
  • - more comprehensive and up-to-date listings
  • - easier searching and browsing
  • - improved linking to full-text

Please try the new site site and let us know what you think by leaving a comment.

More information about the new site's features can be found within Electronic Library - About this site.

To see Publication Information Online in action for example, search Discover for: open data white paper.
