BMJ: Best Practice now available

In response to student feedback, we are very pleased to announce that the Library has taken out a subscription to BMJ Best Practice.

Healthcare professionals need fast and easy access to reliable, up-to-date information when making diagnosis and treatment decisions. This is precisely what Best Practice provides.

Resource of the Week - AMED

What is it?
AMED is specifically aimed at health sciences students. AMED stands for Allied and Complementary Medicine Database. It provides information on alternative treatments for therapists, clinicians, physicians and researchers. It indexes journals and other material from over 500 sources, going as far back as 1995. It focuses on mainly European material. You can access AMED from the Electronic Library or via the Health Sciences LibGuide


Why use it?
AMED is easy to search using keywords, linking your terms together with Boolean operators by using the drop down options alongside the search boxes.
It is available via the EBSCOhost platform, so those of you familiar with searching DISCOVER or CINAHL Plus will recognise the search interface.
AMED includes many journals that are not indexed by other biomedical sources.
AMED is produced by the Health Care Information Service of the British Library. EBSCOhost who offer the AMED database have great help and advice and even have their own YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/ebscopublishing) with helpful tutorials and searching tips;

New Wiley-Blackwell journal agreement

The Library has signed up to the new JISC Collections NESLi2 'Big Deal' journal agreement with Wiley-Blackwell.

Under the new agreement, which runs for 3 years from 2012 to 2014, we have decided to cancel a few low-use (but usually high-price) titles and we have been able to fund a subscription to Geography Compass which was requested in this year's journals review.

The previous agreement started in 2009 and the collection of titles that it included had been static sincethen. This new agreement includes over 130 additional titles which will be available to us from the start of 2012 (including History Compass which was also request in the journals review, and Literature Compass):

CINAHL Plus replaces CINAHL and British Nursing Index

We have upgraded our subscription to CINAHL so that it is now for CINAHL Plus, and at the same time we have dropped our subscription to British Nursing Index. We have updated our links from the library catalogue and LibGuides and we have updated DISCOVER to search CINAHL Plus.

CINAHL Plus provides indexing for more than 4,500 journals from the fields of nursing and allied health, with coverage dating as far back as 1937. Offering complete coverage of English-language nursing journals and publications from the National League for Nursing and the American Nurses' Association, CINAHL Plus covers nursing, biomedicine, health sciences librarianship, alternative/complementary medicine, consumer health and 17 allied health disciplines.  In addition, this database offers access to health care books, nursing dissertations, selected conference proceedings, standards of practice, educational software, audiovisuals and book chapters, as well as Evidence-Based Care Sheets. Searchable cited references for more than 1,340 journals are also included. Full-text material includes nearly 80 journals plus legal cases, clinical innovations, critical paths, drug records, research instruments and clinical trials.

British Nursing Index only indexes 15 journals that are not indexed in CINAHL Plus so we could no longer justify subscribing to BNI too.

Access to all Health Sciences eBooks on ScienceDirect for a year

As previously announced, we have access to all non-Health Sciences eBooks on ScienceDirect for the whole of 2011.

And now we have access to over 700 Health Sciences eBooks on ScienceDirect as well, until March 2012. Towards the end of this period we will be able to choose which titles we want to retain permanent access to (up to a particular value - unless we choose to spend more). Titles cover medicine, dentistry, health sciences, nursing and allied healthcare and veterinary medicine (though note that we have already bought the veterinary medicine collections up to and including 2008 titles).

Trials of databases on EBSCOhost

If we adopt EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) it will make sense to switch any abstracting and indexing databases that we currently take through other platforms to EBSCO instead (where possible). This will mean that they will be searched by the main EDS search, rather than having to bring in search results through its federated search component.

We are currently trialling all of the databases that it would be possible to switch to EBSCO. These all renew at different times of the year. The first to renew (with links to try them on the EBSCO platform) are, next month:

British Nursing Index

Taking these on the EBSCO platform would reunite them with Cinahl and allow us to simultaneously search AMED, BNI and Cinahl, even without recourse to EBSCO Discovery Service.
