International Historical Statistics is an impressive and peerless collection of statistical data from around the world, covering a wide range of socio-economic topics. The collection includes data on the Americas and Europe, but also hard-to-find data on Africa, Asia and Oceania. It is a truly interdisciplinary product that will prove a valuable resource to those researching and studying Business, Economics, Environmental Studies, Geography, History, Politics, Sociology and Statistical Studies.

This new release updates the last print edition of International Historical Statistics, which was published in 2007 in 3 volumes. It now includes 260 years of rich data, collected between 1750-2010 and available online for the first time. Users will find the ability to conduct statistical analysis across both time and geopolitical boundaries particularly valuable. Data tables can be downloaded as ePDFs and/or Excel files.

Liverpool University Press e-books now available

We have just purchased the Liverpool University Press e-books collection on the University Publishing Online platform. Access is available now at http://universitypublishingonline.org.ezproxy.liv.ac.uk/liverpool/home.jsf.

The collection includes 110 titles including many that are heavily borrowed from our print collections, including:

The Long Road to Peace in Northern Ireland
Reading Rochester
Irish, Catholic and Scouse: The History of the Liverpool-Irish, 1800-1940
Liverpool: City of the Sea
The Economic Aspects of Spanish Imperialism in America, 1492-1810
The Disinherited Society: A Personal View of Social Responsibility in Liverpool During the Twentieth Century
Culture, Conflict and Migration: The Irish in Victorian Cumbria
Markets, Market Culture and Popular Protest in Eighteenth-Century Britain and Ireland
Decade of Change: The University of Liverpool 1981-1991
Migration, Mobility and Modernization

If the University Publishing Online platform looks familiar, that's because it is run by Cambridge University Press and uses the same technology as their Cambridge Books Online platform. So it's the usual things that we know you like: PDF chapters that can be downloaded and printed in their entirety, and none of that annoying DRM.
The Library Catalogue, Discover, and the library web pages will be updated in due course.

Partnership with OUP for Oxford Bibliographies Online

The Library is delighted to announce it has entered into a one year partnership with Oxford University Press to help shape development of its exciting new resource Oxford Bibliographies Online.

The Library will offer staff and students at the University the opportunity to feed into the evolution of this resource through focus groups and questionnaires. In return for our help in developing the resource, Oxford University Press will grant us perpetual access to one of the subject bibliographies within the trial, regardless of whether we then choose to subscribe to the resource as a whole.

In the publisher’s words, “Oxford Bibliographies Online helps researchers and students find reliable sources of information to aid their research from within the enormous amount of print and online material available to them.

You can:
• Read a narrative guide to a subject area to get an overview of the subject before beginning detailed research
• Use the bibliography and supporting text provided to conduct more detailed research
• Get an overview of the best scholarship available whether it be a book, chapter, journal, website, or database from both subscription and free resources
• Use a resource that is editorially monitored by an Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Board made up of leading academics in the field from around the world to aid your study
• Keep up-to-date with the latest scholarship in your field as the site expands to reflect newly available material”

Bibliographies in the following subjects are already available, with more to come through the year:
• Atlantic History
• Classics
• Criminology
• Islamic Studies
• Philosophy
• Renaissance and Reformation
• Social Work

You can access Oxford Bibliographies Online through the
library catalogue or through LibGuides. Off-campus access is provided through EZproxy as usual.

If you wish to be involved, and/or want more information about Oxford Bibliographies Online, please contact
Martin Wolf.

TRIAL: Oxford Bibliographies Online

We have a trial of Oxford Bibliographies Online (OBO) until 30th November.

To access this trial go to
http://www.oxfordbibliographies.com/. Off-campus users should use Apps Anywhere, but if we did subscribe to OBO we would of course set up off-campus access via EZproxy as normal.

Oxford Bibliographies Online (OBO) is a tool designed to help busy researchers find reliable sources of information quickly by directing them to exactly the right chapter, book, website, archive, or data set they need for their research. It is a springboard for new research that allows for fluid movement between texts and databases within a given institution’s collection and beyond. It is a starting point for organizing a research plan, or for preparing a writing assignment or syllabus. The style and approach is accessible to students, but the depth of coverage makes it of great use to faculty as well.

OBO is a library of disciplined-based subject modules. In each subject module, leading scholars have produced a literary guide to the most important and significant sources in an area of study they know best. The guides feature a selective list of bibliographic citations supported by direct recommendations about which sources to consult. Each topic has a unique editorial commentary to show how the cited sources are interrelated. The citations promote discoverability as they link out to the sources via your library collection or through Google books and more.

OBO brings quality assurance and authority to online research. All articles receive multiple peer reviews and editorial board vetting to provide reliable and balanced coverage. Articles are regularly updated by their authors so that information in this resource is always current and accurate. In addition to updating existing articles, new topic guides are added on a regular schedule to expand the scope and extent of each subject module in the library.

Our trial includes all of the currently available modules:

Atlantic History
Biblical Studies
Buddhism
Classics
Criminology
Islamic Studies
Philosophy
Renaissance and Reformation
Social Work

Several more modules will be released in the next year:

Winter 2010:

January 2011:

Communication
International Relations
Public Health
Victorian Literature

Coming in 2011:

Anthropology
Cinema and Media Studies
Education

After trying Oxford Bibliographies Online, please leave feedback through the comments section below, specifying which module(s) you are refrring to if possible. You can choose the anonymous option to comment without needing to have a Blogger account, but it helps if you include your name in your feedback so that we can follow up on comments.

March is Women’s History month and to celebrate, Alexander Street Press have made the popular online collection, Women and Social Movements in the U.S., 1600-2000, Scholar's Edition, freely accessible for the entire month.

To access Women and Social Movements, Scholar's Edition, simply visit http://wass.alexanderstreet.com.

This extensive collection of primary historic documents, books, images, scholarly essays, teaching tools, and book and web site reviews documents the history of women’s activism in public life, and is one of the most heavily visited resources for women’s studies and for U.S. history on the Web. How and Why Did the Guerrilla Girls Alter the Art Establishment in New York City, 1985-1995?

The Scholar's Edition also includes more than 40,000 pages of full-text sources, including:
Proceedings of all women's rights conventions, 1848-1869
Proceedings of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, 1874-1898

The Collected Publications of federal, state, and local Commissions on the Status of Women, a digital archive with 90,000 pages of publications, 1961-2005
New content is added semi-annually.

Please also be sure to check out the companion blog to Women and Social Movements,
