TRIAL: Academic Charts Online

We have a trial of Academic Charts Online until the end of August 2013.

To access Academic Charts Online go to http://ipm.academiccharts.com. Use Apps Anywhere for off-campus access. If we were to subscribe, we would setup off-campus access through EZproxy as usual.

Academic Charts Online (ACO) measures the impact of music across countries and cultures. It enables evidence based research across all genres from pop to classical, jazz and world music and examines its impact on art, politics and culture. Features include a growing repository of statistical chart data from the US, UK, Europe, South America and Asia which is current and updated weekly with historical data back to inception of each chart type. There are also links to leading music journals and databases including Cambridge University Press’ Popular Music, Wiley, Taylor & Francis, Rock’s Backpages and RILM. The analytical tools enable evidence-based research,  and  searching is by Artist, Album, Title, Label, Chart Position and Date. The data is provided under exclusive academic license from Billboard, the Official Charts Company and others. Additional countries are added quarterly.

GeoRef, RILM, Philosopher's Index on EBSCOhost

We have transferred our subscriptions to the GeoRef, RILM Abstracts of Music Literature and Philosopher's Index databases from CSA Illumina and OvidSP to EBSCOhost. This will mean that these databases will continue to be included in DISCOVER searches (as they have been for a trial period).

TRIAL: Oxford Bibliographies Online

We have a trial of Oxford Bibliographies Online (OBO) until 30th November.

Oxford Bibliographies Online (OBO) is a tool designed to help busy researchers find reliable sources of information quickly by directing them to exactly the right chapter, book, website, archive, or data set they need for their research. It is a springboard for new research that allows for fluid movement between texts and databases within a given institution’s collection and beyond. It is a starting point for organizing a research plan, or for preparing a writing assignment or syllabus. The style and approach is accessible to students, but the depth of coverage makes it of great use to faculty as well.

OBO is a library of disciplined-based subject modules. In each subject module, leading scholars have produced a literary guide to the most important and significant sources in an area of study they know best. The guides feature a selective list of bibliographic citations supported by direct recommendations about which sources to consult. Each topic has a unique editorial commentary to show how the cited sources are interrelated. The citations promote discoverability as they link out to the sources via your library collection or through Google books and more.

OBO brings quality assurance and authority to online research. All articles receive multiple peer reviews and editorial board vetting to provide reliable and balanced coverage. Articles are regularly updated by their authors so that information in this resource is always current and accurate. In addition to updating existing articles, new topic guides are added on a regular schedule to expand the scope and extent of each subject module in the library.

20 Cengage e-textbooks purchased

We have purchased 20 core e-textbooks from Cengage Learning. We have mutiple copies of these books on the library's shelves but this is the first time that these titles have been made available online. These books have been made available on the Myilibrary platform but note that an unlimited number of people can access any of these titles at the same time.

Trials of databases on EBSCOhost

If we adopt EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) it will make sense to switch any abstracting and indexing databases that we currently take through other platforms to EBSCO instead (where possible). This will mean that they will be searched by the main EDS search, rather than having to bring in search results through its federated search component.

We are currently trialling all of the databases that it would be possible to switch to EBSCO. These all renew at different times of the year. The first to renew (with links to try them on the EBSCO platform) are, next month:

Taking these on the EBSCO platform would reunite them with Cinahl and allow us to simultaneously search AMED, BNI and Cinahl, even without recourse to EBSCO Discovery Service.
