New Elsevier journal agreement

The Library has signed up to the new JISC Collections NESLi2 'Big Deal' journal agreement with Elsevier.

Under the new agreement, which runs for 5 years from 2012 to 2016, we have decided to cancel a few low-use (but usually high-price) titles:

Nevertheless we will continue to have on-going access to these titles as long as they remain in Elsevier's "Freedom Collection".

Some of these have not been available to us before because they are not included in the Freedom Collection, and others are our best-used, non-subscribed titles in the collection. By subscribing to these titles we will earn permanent access to the content published during our subscription. We are only subscribing to new titles where usage statistics show that a reasonable number of abstracts have been viewed, suggesting that there is demand for these titles.

CSA databases withdrawn

We have not renewed our subscription to the CSA databases collection (formerly on the CSA Illumina platform, more recently on the ProQuest platform).

Usage of these databases had declined substantially since we introduced Discover, and analysis of their coverage showed that the journals they covered were already included in Discover and/or other databases like Web of Science, Scopus and BIOSIS.

If you were a regular user of CSA databases please contact your liaison librarian to discuss alternative sources.

New ProQuest platform replaces CSA Illumina

The CSA Illumina site and the old ProQuest platform have now been combined into a new ProQuest platform which allows searching of any combination of CSA databases and ProQuest databases.

The previous sites will exist until June, but we have already updated our links to the main ProQuest and CSA databases and would encourage you to try it out.

As part of the transition, many of the more niche CSA databases have lost their identity and have been subsumed into larger databases.

So if you were a regular user of databases like:

Water Resources Abstracts

(and we know from our usage statistics that most people are already searching larger clusters of CSA databases) then please take a look at the new ProQuest platform and familarise yourself with the new arrangement of databases. For example, the databases above are now part of:

respectively. We plan to stop linking to the old CSA Illumina site from the library catalogue and LibGuides by the end of February.

Results from the old sites will still appear in the More Results area of DISCOVER until EBSCO create new 'connectors' to search the new ProQuest platform.

ScienceDirect eBooks in 2011

Throughout 2011 we will have access to around 7,800 additional eBook titles on ScienceDirect. This is part of a usage-driven acquisition trial with Elsevier and the Universities of Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow.

Faculty of 1000 Biology and Faculty of 1000 Medicine have merged to become... Faculty of 1000. Our subscription now also includes The Scientist: Magazine of the Life Sciences.

Never heard of Faculty of 1000? Think of it as a panel of experts who manage your information overload by highlighting and reviewing the articles that you really should read. Or the long version of that...

The core service of Faculty of 1000 (F1000) identifies and evaluates the most important articles in biology and medical research publications. The selection process comprises a peer-nominated global 'Faculty' of the world's leading scientists and clinicians who rate the best of the articles they read and explain their importance. Launched in 2002, F1000 was conceived as a collaboration of 1000 international Faculty Members. The remit of our service continues to grow and the Faculty now numbers more than 10,000 experts whose evaluations form a fully searchable resource identifying the best research available. Faculty Members and their evaluations are organized into over 40 Faculties (subjects), which are further subdivided into over 300 Sections. On average, 1,500 new evaluations are published each month; this corresponds to approximately the top 2% of all published articles in the biological and medical sciences.

BioOne - more titles

Our subscription to BioOne, the collection of biology e-journals from a large number of mainly small learned societies now includes both their Collection 1 and Collection 2.

What is more, it is costing us less to take both collections, than to take just Collection 1, courtesy of the joint UK-German-Danish-Dutch Knowledge Exchange consortium.

There are 61 additional titles available.

TRIAL: CRCnetBASE e-books

We have a trial of CRCnetBASE until 14th May 2010.

CRCnetBASE is the science and technology e-books platform from the CRC Press imprint of Taylor & Francis Group. It includes over 5,000 titles, and they presented in PDF chapters without restrictive Digital Rights Management (DRM) software.

De Gruyter E-journals Collection available

From 2010 we have started subscription to the full collection of journals from De Gruyter. This adds access to nearly 80 titles in fields ranging from Classics to Medicine, on top of our existing subscriptions. The collection restores access to two titles that had to be cancelled in recent years despite of good levels of usage:

De Gruyter is celebrating 260 years of publishing and has recently announced a rebranding and modernisation of its image. It intends to increase the proportion of its output that is published in the English language.

BIOSIS (Biological Abstracts) is back!

We now have access to the BIOSIS Previews database (i.e. Biological Abstracts Online) on the Web of Knowledge platform, with coverage from 1969 to date. You will find links to BIOSIS in the library catalogue and Metalib, or you can go straight to http://www.isiknowledge.com.ezproxy.liv.ac.uk/BIOSIS.


We cancelled BIOSIS several years ago, but a recent national agreement between JISC and ThomsonReuters has seen the BIOSIS Previews Backfile 1969-2008 purchased nationally by JISC, and the Current Data of the database made available to 'new' subscribers like us for a nominal fee that we have agreed to fund.
