Resource of the Week: ProQuest Dissertations and Theses

What is it?

Essentially two databases, ProQuest Dissertations &Theses (PQDT)

& ProQuest Dissertations & Theses: UK & Ireland.

ProQuest Dissertations & Theses: UK & Ireland is the most comprehensive available record of doctoral theses from the United Kingdom and Ireland. The collection offers the most comprehensive available listing of theses, with abstracts accepted for higher degrees by universities in the United Kingdom and Ireland, since 1716

ProQuest Dissertations & Theses (PQDT) is the world's most comprehensive collection of dissertations and theses from around the world, spanning from 1861 to the present day and offering full text for most of the dissertations added since 1997.

Why use it?

• Find what research has been done in your area (historical)
• See what the current research topics are in your area – find gaps to exploit or case studies to explore further
• Get ideas for your dissertation
• Get ideas on layout
• Get ideas on how to construct an abstract
• Get the full text of a dissertation relevant to your research

Even just looking at the contents pages can spark ideas and provide direction for your research.

Tables of Contents in e-journal catalogue records

You may have noticed that many of our catalogue records for e-journals now include the tables of contents (TOC) of the latest issue, with links to each article. For example, take a look at Nature.

We pull in the table of contents using the publisher's RSS feed via the JournalTOCs service, which sprang from the ticTOCs service that we led.

This is an experimental service and we are aware of some glitches. In some cases the article links might lead to a site where we don't have access to the journal, even though we do have access to the journal elsewhere. We link to articles via EZproxy for off-campus access but this sometimes leads to an EZproxy error message because we try link to a site that EZproxy doesn't know about.

We are endeavouring to minimise the number of such dead-ends, but if you do get led astray then follow our main 'View this journal online' link to visit the site where we can access the journal online (though it is possible that we don't have access to the latest issues, especially if our main link leads to a full-text database from EBSCO or ProQuest).

We welcome your feedback about whether you find this service useful, and please let us know about any glitches and we'll try to put them right, within reason.

3 Clinics titles finally available online

We have finally bitten the bullet and switched the subscriptions for our 3 Elsevier Clinics titles in medicine from print to online. The online version costs about 10 times the print version, so use them or lose them!

Cairn French Studies e-journal collection available

We now subscribe to the French Studies e-journal collection on the cairn.info platform. This is a collection of around 80 journals and has been funded by the cancellation of our print subscriptions to journals within this collection. See our catalogue records for a list of the titles available.

New Elsevier journal agreement

The Library has signed up to the new JISC Collections NESLi2 'Big Deal' journal agreement with Elsevier.

Under the new agreement, which runs for 5 years from 2012 to 2016, we have decided to cancel a few low-use (but usually high-price) titles:

Some of these have not been available to us before because they are not included in the Freedom Collection, and others are our best-used, non-subscribed titles in the collection. By subscribing to these titles we will earn permanent access to the content published during our subscription. We are only subscribing to new titles where usage statistics show that a reasonable number of abstracts have been viewed, suggesting that there is demand for these titles.

EBSCO Dentistry & Oral Sciences Source now available

We now subscribe to EBSCO Dentistry & Oral Sciences Source, a collection of more than 160 full-text journals, including many of the top ranked titles in the discipline, as well as dozens of full-text monographs. It also contains cover-to-cover indexing and abstracts for 210 journals and dozens of monographs.

Of particular importance are journals from Quintessence Publishing including their flagship journal, Quintessence International. Previously our only online access to their journals has involved clunky username & password access. Now it's all there seamlessly in Discover, though EBSCOhost, and linked to from other sources (like Medline) via find it @ liverpool.

Goodbye Informaworld. Hello Taylor & Francis Online

Today saw the launch of Taylor & Francis Online, the replacement for the much unloved Informaworld platform. T&F have set up redirects, and we have configured EZproxy to work with the new site, so clicking on our existing links for T&F journals, either from the Library Catalogue or from SFX / find it @ liverpool should take you to the journal on the new site (though you will probably have to navigate your way from there to the actual article you want).

Over the next few days we will update our links to go straight to the new site, and as the knowledge base behind SFX gets updated we will once again be able to provide direct article-level linking to T&F journals.

The Taylor & Francis Online platform will in the future be the home for T&F eBooks too, but we're not expecting those to go live until 2012.

The new site is powered by Atypon's Literatum software which powers many other publishers' sites, including Annual Reviews and the New England Journal of Medicine, so we're expecting this site to  be much more reliable than Informaworld was.

TRIAL: Landes Biosciences e-journals

We have trial access to all Landes Biosciences until the end of 2011. Catalogue records are available and they are also active in SFX / find it @ liverpool.

Towards the end of the trial period we will look at usage levels with the publisher and see if we can arrive at a mutually acceptable price for ongoing access to all titles.

Note that we already subscribe to Cell Cycle and we also link to three Open Access journals from Landes.
