Resource of the week: ASTM Standards and Engineering Digital Library

What is it?

ASTM Standards and Engineering Digital Library is a collection of industry-leading standards and technical engineering information.

The University of Liverpool Library has taken out a new subscription from January 2013, giving university staff and students full-text access to ASTM standards, books and papers.

ASTM International, formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials, is a globally recognized leader in the development and delivery of international standards, which are used around the world to improve product quality and enhance safety.

Why use it?

Use ASTM Standards and Engineering Digital Library if you would like to access the full-text of any ASTM standard or other publication by ASTM.

To search for a specific ASTM standard, just enter the standard number in the first search box (e.g. E646).  The most recent version of the standard will be at the top of the results list and you can download the PDF.

You can also search by keyword and limit your search to Standards or Engineering Publications (which includes journals, symposia papers, manuals and e-books).

Visit the Standards and Patents LibGuide to access ASTM and other standards, including the full text of British Standards.

Resource of the week: Knovel

What is it?

Knovel is a key source of technical information for engineers and scientists.

It provides an interactive platform for e-books and databases and gives fully searchable online access to hundreds of handbooks, data books, dictionaries, encyclopedias and technical reference books.

Why use it?

Knovel allows you to search across a very broad range of data, pull out what’s relevant and manipulate that data for your own purposes using its interactive tools.

You can use Knovel to look up a chemical formula, compare properties of substances or research alternative energy sources.

Knovel’s Data Search allows you to search by numeric data and properties from graphs, equations and tables in e-books quickly and easily. You can manipulate data values and export them into other applications, such as Excel.

Visit the Knovel LibGuide and investigate its links to videos and Webinars to show you how to make best use of Knovel.

From 10 September to 1 December 2012, Knovel is running its University Challenge, with a chance to win iPads and other prizes.  There are two new questions each week, which you can answer using Knovel.

Liverpool University Press e-books now available

We have just purchased the Liverpool University Press e-books collection on the University Publishing Online platform. Access is available now at http://universitypublishingonline.org.ezproxy.liv.ac.uk/liverpool/home.jsf.

The collection includes 110 titles including many that are heavily borrowed from our print collections, including:

The Long Road to Peace in Northern Ireland
Reading Rochester
Irish, Catholic and Scouse: The History of the Liverpool-Irish, 1800-1940
Liverpool: City of the Sea
The Economic Aspects of Spanish Imperialism in America, 1492-1810
The Disinherited Society: A Personal View of Social Responsibility in Liverpool During the Twentieth Century
Culture, Conflict and Migration: The Irish in Victorian Cumbria
Markets, Market Culture and Popular Protest in Eighteenth-Century Britain and Ireland
Decade of Change: The University of Liverpool 1981-1991
Migration, Mobility and Modernization

If the University Publishing Online platform looks familiar, that's because it is run by Cambridge University Press and uses the same technology as their Cambridge Books Online platform. So it's the usual things that we know you like: PDF chapters that can be downloaded and printed in their entirety, and none of that annoying DRM.
The Library Catalogue, Discover, and the library web pages will be updated in due course.

British Library 19th Century Books now online

Earlier this week the British Library announced the availability of its digitised collection of 19th Century Books through the JISC Historic Books platform, which is part of JISC eCollections.

We subscribe to JISC eCollections, so you can now access this collection of about 65,000 books that were digitised by Microsoft back when it was competing with Google to digitise the world's out-of-copyright books.

JISC Historic Books also hosts the content from EEBO and ECCO, and all three collections can be searched together. We still have access to EEBO and ECCO on their own platforms, at least until the JISC Historic Books interface improves sufficiently to render the other platforms unnecessary.

You will find JISC Historic Books listed in the library catalogue and LibGuides, along with the other two components of JISC eCollections: JISC Media Hub and JISC Journal Archives.

We do not have catalogue records for the individual books within JISC Historic Books, EEBO or ECCO, though JISC Collections do promise to provide these in the future.

Download ebrary e-books to your device

On Ebrary it is now possible to:

◦ download a chapter or page range (subject to the same limits as for printing) as a permanent PDF image file for use on a computer or e-book reading device (including a Kindle)

◦ download an entire book for 14 days onto a computer or a device that supports Adobe Digital Editions (including iPad but not Kindle)

The ‘entire book’ option uses Adobe Digital Editions which in turn associates a specific PC with a device. This option is therefore not suitable for use on PCs in computer clusters, only personal computers and devices. CSD have looked into installing Adobe Digital Editions on the MWS but it just does not make sense because of its need to identify a user with a specific machine.

Note that we will not allow 'entire e-book' downloads from single-user titles because no other user would have access whilst it was downloaded. We have 395 single-user books from ebrary. You can however download a chapter or page range (subject to the same limits as for printing) from single-user e-books.

If you are on campus you will have direct access to ebrary but when you try to download, or use another ‘bookshelf’ feature, ebrary will redirect you to our EZproxy login page which will in turn log you into your ebrary account.

If you are off campus you will be automatically be redirected to to login via EZproxy. Ebrary knows you are a user from the University of Liverpool because our ebrary URLs specify that the book is in the UoL ebrary library.

For more details see our e-books LibGuide and these ebrary support pages:

Create an image PDF of a specific chapter or page range
http://support.ebrary.com/category/?p=655
◦ Same page limits as for printing.
◦ Accessible on most computers and devices, including the Kindle.
◦ Additional (free) software is typically not needed.
◦ Files do not expire.

Download an entire document as an e-book in Adobe Digital Editions
http://support.ebrary.com/category/?p=687
◦ You first need to install Adobe Digital Editions (free online).
◦ Accessible on most computers and devices, but not the Kindle.
◦ Up to 10 documents at a time per person.
◦ Full-document downloading is only available for multi-user e-books (not single-user-only documents)
◦ Multi-user e-books can be downloaded for 14 days.
◦ We will not allow downloads from single-user titles because no other user would have access whilst it was downloaded. We have about 400 single-user books from ebrary.
◦ Some publishers prohibit full-document downloading of their documents. See here for a list: http://support.ebrary.com/english/download/1089.
