Launched in October 2012 by Bloomsbury Publishing in collaboration with the Churchill Archives Centre, the Churchill Archive is a digital library of modern international history available online for the first time. It includes more than 800,000 pages of original documents, produced between 1874 and 1965, ranging from Winston S. Churchill’s personal correspondence to his official exchanges with kings, presidents, politicians, and military leaders. This is a unique online resource offering new insight into a fascinating period of our past.

Voices from Wartime France 1939-1945 now available
We have purchased Voices from Wartime France 1939-1945: Clandestine Resistance and Vichy Newspapers on the Archives Unbound platform (where we also have East Germany from Stalinization to the New Economic Policy, 1950-1963). Access is available now and it will appear in the library catalogue and LibGuides (including our A-Z list of databases) very soon.
Voices from Wartime France, 1939-45: Clandestine Resistance and Vichy Newspapers constitutes the sum of the French press that actually reached Britain during the Occupation of 1940-44. It is the record of what was known by the British about the hearts and minds of the French people at the most dramatic period of their shared history. This unique collection offers the complete French holdings of the British Library, acquired through a variety of intelligence, clandestine and neutral sources, offering as full a view of life during the War as was possible at the time.
The British Library holds many resistance titles never acquired by the Bibliothèque Nationale, because it was under German occupation. Indeed this is the biggest and most important collection of titles from Occupied France anywhere outside France, and has remained almost unknown to the scholarly community. Offering a full picture of the basis on which many key political decisions were made in Britain about the conduct of the war in France, this significant discovery will offer new light on a much studied period.
Resistance papers were produced anonymously by the Maquis, deep in the provinces, and smuggled to Britain to be used by the Foreign Office Intelligence Division.

The Illustrated London News Historical Archive,1842-2003, purchased
We are delighted to announce that after a successful trial, the library has purchased The Illustrated London News Historical Archive,1842-2003.
Access is available now (with off-campus access via EZproxy as usual) and a catalogue record has been created.
With its debut in 1842 the Illustrated London News became the world's first illustrated weekly newspaper, sparking a revolution in journalism and news reporting. The publication presented a vivid picture of British and world events - including news of war, disasters, royalty, social affairs, the arts and science. Containing over 260,000 full colour pages, fully searchable and browseable, the ILN Historical Archive 1842-2003 provides unprecedented access to the entire run of this unique historical record.

Daily Express Archive purchased
Following our succesful trial of the Daily Express Archive, which yielded several positive comments, and higher usage than the Daily Mirror Archive to which we already subscribe on the same platform, we are delighted to announce that we have now purchased the Daily Express Archive in perpetuity.
Access is available now at UKPressOnline and a catalogue record has been created. The Daily Express Archive can be searched together with the Daily Mirror Archive, or on its own. Off-campus access is provided through EZproxy as usual.
Note that we currently have trial access to the Sunday Express, Daily Star, Star on Sunday and Watchman but access to these will expire soon.

Documents included in this collection are predominantly instructions to and despatches from U.S. diplomatic, and consular personnel regarding political, military, economic, social, industrial, and other internal conditions and events in East Germany.

Created by the U.S. intelligence community to benefit policy makers and analysts, FBIS Daily Reports offer foreign views and perspectives on historical events from thousands of monitored broadcasts and publications. Translated into English from more than 50 languages these comprehensive media reports from around the globe include news, interviews, speeches and editorial commentary.
