Springer MyCopy - for €24.95 its yours!

For the last three years, 2008 to 2010, the Library has bought the full Springer e-books collection. This also entitles us to access their other e-books published since 2005 (and book series volumes from 1997 to 2004). We now have access to over 23,000 e-books and that number will continue to grow as 2010 titles are published.

We have now become one of the first European adopters of the Springer MyCopy programme which is already active in the US and Canada. For €24.95 including postage and packaging you can order your own personal, high-quality, digitally-printed, softcover book of the Springer eBooks that we can access online.

The book will by specially printed for you at Lightning Source's plant in Milton Keynes and dispatched to you in a few working days. The maximum delivery time for MyCopy in Europe is 8-11 working days, but with all copies being dispatched from Milton Keynes we anticipate shorter delivery times within the UK.

The only limitations of MyCopy are:

- MyCopy is available for books published since 2005 only
- MyCopy books are printed in greyscale inside (but with a colour cover) - you will need to use the online version for colour images (or buy a standard print copy). Where colour images are essential for safety (e.g. in Medicine) MyCopy may not be available for that title.
- MyCopy is not available for books of more than 832 pages, simply because that is the largest size possible for the print-on-demand machines.

To order a MyCopy book just click on the 'Buy a print copy' panel on the e-book's page on SpringerLink (which you can get to from our catalogue record). You will be prompted to register for a personal SpringerLink account, or sign in if you already have one. Then you just need to enter your payment and delivery details.

As an example, one of our best-used Springer e-books in 2009 was the Handbook of Nanomedicine. Even second-hand copies of this title are selling for nearly £70 on Amazon. MyCopy will provide it for you for around £22 (depending on the exchange rate at the time).

Springer Protocols now available

As part of our purchase of Springer's 2009 e-books collection we have also bought a year's access to Springer Protocols. We have access to all volumes for a year, and if we don't renew next year we wrill retain access to all volumes published in 2009.

Springer Protocols, published by Humana Press, include the following series:

Methods in Pharmacology and Toxicology

and complements our subscriptions to Cold Springer Harbor Protocols and Current Protocols in Molecular Biology from Wiley-Blackwell.

Springer 2009 e-books now available

We have now purchased the complete collection of 2009 e-books from Springer, following our purchase of the 2005-2008 titles last year. There are already over 2,000 extra titles now available to us at:

As usual, these Springer e-books come as simple PDF files (one per chapter) which you can download and print just as for e-journal articles. We know that you prefer e-books without DRM (Digital Rights Management): the barriers that stop you copying and printing the content you need to use, and that deliver e-books to you a page at a time. We now download more e-book chapters from SpringerLink than e-journal articles!

We will load catalogue records for the January to May 2009 titles soon, and bring our 2008 records up to date.

Over 475 additional Springer journals

For 2009 we have expanded our Springer big deal to include an additional 479 titles for virtually no additional cost. The additional collections include Springer's:

- Chinese Library of Science
- Russian Library of Science
- Versita (previously known as Central European Library of Science)
- titles that have transferred to Springer in recent years
- titles from imprints acquired by Springer in recent years (including the Current Medicine Group and Humana Press)

12,000 e-books purchased on SpringerLink

We have purchased all of the English-language Springer e-books published between 2005 and 2008 (including books not yet published) - some 12,000 in total. This includes collections in:

Springer are the world's largest publisher of STM books and are at the forefront of e-book provision. They publish every title simultaneously in print and online on their SpringerLink platform, and provide e-books in PDF format with each chapter in a separate file. This means that viewing and printing from Springer e-books is the same as from Springer e-journals.
