EZproxy available again

Both machines that provide the EZproxy service are available again. Should EZproxy fail again, the advice below will apply again:

To access our library e-resources, please right-click the link you require and select Copy Shortcut. Then paste into your browser's location bar and delete the http://ezproxy.liv.ac.uk/login?url= from the start of the URL, and then hit Return. You may need to do this repeatedly, as many of our link are prefixed with an EZproxy login.

If you are off-campus, you will need to login to AppsAnywhere. Then click on Internet Explorer (8 or 9) in the Web or Office folders of AppsAnywhere. Then follow the procedure above to bypass EZproxy.

Creating stable links to library e-resources

If you currently provide your own links to library e-journals, e-books etc, they probably contain .ezproxy.liv.ac.uk int he URL. These links should continue to work. Nevertheless it is a good idea to update them to new-style links next time you come to review your links.

To create new-style links, remove .ezproxy.liv.ac.uk from the URL and instead add http://ezproxy.liv.ac.uk/login?url= to the start of the URL.

For example, instead of:

http://inpractice.bmj.com.ezproxy.liv.ac.uk/

use:

http://ezproxy.liv.ac.uk/login?url=http://inpractice.bmj.com/

Note that the result of following such a URL is that you will arrive at either:

http://inpractice.bmj.com.libproxy1.liv.ac.uk/

or

http://inpractice.bmj.com.libproxy2.liv.ac.uk/

However, you should never use URLs that contain libproxy1 or libproxy2 in bookmarked links or links embedded in VITAL etc. To link to sites via EZproxy always use URLs that begin http://ezproxy.liv.ac.uk/login?url= .

It is probably easiest to locate a link to the resourve you want in the library catalogue and then right-click our 'View this... online' link, Copy the shortcut and paste it into VITAL or wherever you are placing your links.

To create deep links, for example to a journal article rather than to a whole journal, there is a tool in VITAL: in Sessions/Resources, choose Add Interactive Tool and find it @ liverpool Journals.

To build find it @ liverpool links outside VITAL, enter the article's details into our 'Go to an Article - journal, vol, page, year known' form at http://www.liv.ac.uk/library/e-library/e-journals.html and click the FIND IT button. That will result in a URL like:

http://sfxhosted.exlibrisgroup.com.libproxy2.liv.ac.uk/lpu?title=Geografiska+Annaler+Series+B+Human+Geography&volume=92&issue=1&spage=1&date=2010&issn=&eissn=

To turn that into the correct form replace:

http://sfxhosted.exlibrisgroup.com.libproxy2.liv.ac.uk/lpu (or libproxy1)

with

http://ezproxy.liv.ac.uk/login?url=http://openurl.ac.uk

to give for example:

http://ezproxy.liv.ac.uk/login?url=http://openurl.ac.uk?title=Geografiska+Annaler+Series+B+Human+Geography&volume=92&issue=1&spage=1&date=2010&issn=&eissn=

An alternative approach for journal articles is to link via the article's DOI, as long as were have access from the publisher's site where the DOI links to, and not at EBSCO or ProQuest for example.

To link via the DOI, just add the DOI to the end of:

http://ezproxy.liv.ac.uk/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/

for example:

http://ezproxy.liv.ac.uk/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/10.1111/j.1461-0248.2012.01770.x

For some resources, notably some e-book platforms, we do not link via EZproxy at all:

For ebrary, do not include EZproxy in the link. For example, just use a link like http://site.ebrary.com/lib/liverpool/Doc?id=10147034 like we do in the library catalogue, see http://library.liv.ac.uk/record=b2135120~S6. Ebrary will detect off-campus users and direct them through their own EZproxy single sign-on mechanism.

For some other sites, notably Dawsonera and Myilibrary, we use Shibboleth (usually known as Institutional Login) which usually uses horrible long URLs like:
https://www.dawsonera.com/guard/protected/dawson.jsp?name=urn:mace:eduserv.org.uk:athens:provider:liv.ac.uk&dest=http://www.dawsonera.com/depp/reader/protected/external/AbstractView/S9781846314162 (see e.g. http://library.liv.ac.uk/record=b2492636~S6).

Please contact your liaison librarian if you have problems building stable links to our e-resources.

EZproxy update - nearly there!

Firstly we would like to apologise for the recent problems with EZproxy. The problems were caused by switching EZproxy authentication to a new server. In fact, to a pair of new servers so that if one server had a problem, access would continue through the other server without any disruption.

The timing of this change was forced upon us by external events outside our control. We would have preferred to make the change in the summer of course. We had also tested the new setup but once we went live problems became apparent that had not been observed in testing.

In the longer term we are sure that this dual-server setup will provide a more resilient service. However, we recognise that the teething problems and their timing have been, ahem, unfortunate.

Today we have resolved the following problems:

· Ebrary e-books are available off-campus again, and are now available for download to devices once more

· Links from Discover to our e-books, and 'Permalinks' to records and searches in Discover and EBSCOhost databases are working correctly again

· Links to specific resources such as Mary Ann Liebert journals and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery are now working properly again

As mentioned in previous posts, old-style links (ones containing .ezproxy.liv.ac.uk) should now successfully redirect. If you have created links to resources and routed them via EZproxy there should not be any need to update them immediately.

Nevertheless it would be a good idea to update links when you next come to review them. We will provide a separate post about how to link to our e-resources.

Please contact us if you continue to experience problems accessing our e-resources.

EZproxy downtime - workarounds

The EZproxy server went down over the weekend due to a disk failure. It is now running again using an alternative disk. If ever you experience a problem with EZproxy functionality, here is how to bypass EZproxy but still obtain access to the Library's e-resources whether you are on- or off-campus:

1. For On-campus use

Right-click on the link to the resource and copy the shortcut.

Paste that into your browser’s location bar (i.e. the place where the URL of the current page appears).

Delete .ezproxy.liv.ac.uk from the URL and hit return.

e.g. the New Scientist is
http://www.newscientist.com/months rather than http://www.newscientist.com.ezproxy.liv.ac.uk/months.

2. For Off-campus use

Use the Windows Terminal Service at http://wts.liv.ac.uk/. (You may need to install client software on your PC – follow the links on the WTS login page to do so).

In the WTS, click on the Office or Web folders and then click on Internet Explorer 7 or IE7.

Then use that version of Internet Explorer to visit web pages, and use the technique above to remove .ezproxy.liv.ac.uk from the URLs.

When you use the WTS you are running Internet Explorer on an on-campus server and then windowing its output to your PC.

The WTS also gives you simple access to your M: drive for downloading the articles that you require.

Easier access to e-resources off-campus - LibX toolbar

Much as we like to encourage you to start your off-campus searches from the library catalogue or the library's e-resources pages, especially since Athens was withdrawn, we know that lots of you like to start from places like Google Scholar, Pubmed or ScienceDirect. The problem is that these sites lead you to full-text articles that you cannot access because the sites don't know that you are a member of the University of Liverpool.

Our new LibX toolbar for Firefox gets around this problem. At any point you can right-click on a web page and choose to reload it via EZproxy. You'll be taken to our EZproxy login page and then back to the page you were at, but now as an authenticated University of Liverpool user with access to full-text. Alternatively, you can right-click on a link and choose to access the link via EZproxy.

The LibX toolbar offers many other features. It gives you a toolbar to search the library catalogue; it adds find it @ liverpool links to Google Scholar; it turns every PMID in PubMed into a find it @ liverpool link; it adds 'cues' to sites like Amazon.com so you can find it if the library has a book you have found; and you can select text on a page and search for it in the library catalogue or in Google Scholar.

To install LibX and to find out more about its features, see http://www.liv.ac.uk/library/electron/libx.html. If you do not currently use Firefiox you can install it for free from http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/.
