The receipt of a £1M bequest from a former student, Janet Gnosspelius, will enable us to remodel the ground floor of the library over the summer, significantly improving facilities and services for students and staff.
In the Abercromby Wing there will be additional exit turnstiles to help ease queues at busy times and a new help desk providing a first point of contact for library users.
The area overlooking Abercromby Sq, including the former Short Loan area, will be opened up to provide additional social study space and a new ‘self service’ area will be created, incorporating an automated book sorter which will improve sorting and ‘return to shelf’ times. This will also give us the opportunity to improve the arrangements for the collection of reserved items.
The area behind Special Collections & Archives, on the ground floor of the Grove Wing, will be transformed into a new, access controlled, staff and research postgraduate reading room. The room will be equipped with high quality furnishings and wi fi and there will be a number of fixed PCs and laptop plug-in points, as well as traditional study spaces with task lighting. A small number of lockers will also be provided.
Work on these projects will commence on Monday 9th July and this will necessitate the creation of a temporary entrance in the Grove Wing as there will be no access to the Ground Floor of the Abercromby Wing. The SJL will be closed on Saturday mornings for the duration of the project (but not during the re-sit period). Library services will be maintained as usual throughout and further updates will be posted here regularly. If you have any queries about the project please contact Laura Dunn or Carol Kay.
